Movies like Morbius or Venom 2 are going to have to wait a long time until they are released, as Sony wants them to hit theatres 100%.
Sony Pictures has announced that Morbius and Venom 2: There Will Be Carnage, will now premiere in 2024. The reason is simple and pretty clear, the theatres are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the production house doesn’t want to mess with the wrong timing.
The studio has now shared a surprising statement. Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman Tony Vinciquerra has confirmed that no big box office hits will be released until the virus clears.
“We won’t do a mistake of putting $200 million movies on stake, contrasting on the market until the theatres are ready to open as they did in the normal times.”
So clearly aware of the fact that Tenet has been a box office flop in North American theatres this past weekend.
As fans of movies and tv shows, you may have also noticed quite extraordinary decisions taking place over the next 6 months in the entertainment industry. Mainly regarding the release of movies, their schedule, and their marketing.
Unfortunately, we will see how many films are delayed. Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow may not arrive until 2024. There was high hope for Tenet, but it has been a calamity at the box office.
Virus or cinema:
This is definitely concerning to anyone eager to see the two Marvel movies mentioned above because there will be a long wait. In fact, until there is a vaccine and life returns to normal and theatres open 100%, it seems that they do not want to take risks, and they will not release great films. Additionally, Sony Pictures is fortunate that it does not have to rely solely on its big-screen adventures, so the studio can afford to take its time.
What about Spider-Man 3? Although theoretically owned by Sony, they share the rights with Marvel Studios / Disney. So it may also be much longer than expected.
