Bad Boys For Life: Will Smith Was To Blame For The Delay

After a long wait of 17 years, Bad Boys For Life is the third installment of the Bad Boys Film series, but why did this take so long? In Michael Bay’s buddy cup, Bad Boys, viewers worldwide welcomed detectives Michael Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) in 1995. Although it did not do well with critics, it was a success for the box office and a succession, called Bad Boys II, was published in 2003.

2020 appears to be the year of long overdue sequences, and the first year in line is Bad Boys For Life. The film brings Smith and Lawrence together as Lowrey and Burnett over a decade after their final adventure, and a lot has changed during those days. The pair walked on their own and Burnett became a police inspector, while Lowrey led a group of cops as he also suffered a life-cycle crisis.

The trilogy of Bad Boys sounds like a fitting final chapter, especially after all the time that passed between this and the second film. So why do Bad Boys For Life come 17 years after the previous movie?

Why Did Bad Boys For Life Got Delayed?

The third film from Bad Boys has been in progress for years, with various obstacles continually pushing it back. In 2008, Michael Bay said he might return for Bad Boys 3 as director But, the biggest problem was the expense, as his salaries and that of Will Smith were too high. By 2014, David Guggenheim worked on the film’s story, with Lawrence saying later that a written script and parts were cast. Joe Carnahan was in discussions to write and probably direct the next year. At the time, Bad Boys 3 was scheduled to release in February 2017.

The film was pushed back to January 2018 in August 2016 to avoid competing with the Wonderwoman of Patty Jenkins and was officially named Bad Boys For Life. At the beginning of 2017, Carnahan left the project, and Sony removed the film. In January 2018, when Sony commenced negotiations with the directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Bad Boys For Life revived. The project finally started production in January 2019 and was officially released in January 2024.

Bad Boys For Life, the many delays were a result of schedule problems, budget constraints and strategic efforts to ensure that significant launches from other studios did not interfere. Luckily, Sony never gave up and found ways to achieve it, even if it took a little too long for it to happen.

Martin Lawrence’s Explanation For The Delay

Martin Lawrence conducted a further interview and gave the 17-year delay the “most concise explanation.”

“It wasn’t right the script,” he said. “We didn’t want that. We wanted to make a sequel, Yeah, man, that is what I’m talking about. It’s getting better.”

Will Smith is notorious for having high creative input into any project in which he participates. This is the same reason why in April last year director Joe Carnahan eventually decided to split the movie.

During the interview, Lawrence always talked about people asking him to update the film and gave some excellent life advice.
