Keanu’s two projects will be released digitally:
Starring Keanu Reeves as SpongeBob: Sponge on the Run and Bill & Ted Face the Music, both slated for release in August, they could instead go live on digital platforms.
As most theaters around the world remain closed in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the third feature film SpongeBob and the long-awaited third entry into the Bill & Ted franchise will follow the heartwarming Trolls World Tour and Scoob has just been released! Being the latest high profile titles released by theaters for premium video on demand, each one is available for $ 19.99 for a 48-hour rental.
These movies should be released in theaters: BoxOffice
Neither Spongebob nor Bill and Ted Face the Music are big hits, so don’t despair of heavy hits like Wonder Woman, Tenet, or Mulan from 1984 that are digital. Indeed, Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOffice.com, believes that big movie studios want these movies in theaters, no matter what.
Beyond all this, there is the bad blood between the big studios and the theatrical chains in the first digital releases. Universal won an AMC boycott after the Trolls World Tour was released live on VOD and based on that, I guess the theatrical chains are equally upset for Scoob! following the same path, hoping that this is not a new trend. And above all, there are persistent rumors that Amazon is about to buy AMC Entertainment.
Whatever happens, it seems that we will face a very different theatrical panorama after going through this pandemic, that’s for sure.
