Dune: What Is The ‘Pain Box’ In Trailer?

The DUNE trailer has already been released, and it is simply spectacular, it also leaves certain unknowns that we can solve thanks to the books.

Attention SPOILERS.

Maybe after watching the DUNE trailer, you are thinking, “What’s in the box?” Although Denis Villeneuve has created a beautiful and ambitious sci-fi epic, both the book and, apparently, the movie is full of terms, names, and traditions that can make you get a little lost. In the trailer, we can see reverend mother Gaius Mohiam (Charlotte Rampling) asking Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) to put his hand in a box. Mohiam forces Paul to keep his hands over the box, but what’s in the box?

Inside the box is a needle called Gom Jabbar. A needle that has been labeled as the key to Gom Jabbar’s proof of Humanity. The scene which invigorated rumors within the fans is basically a test that the subject has to pass which measures humanity in the subject.

Anyone willing to take the test has to put his/her hands into the box which causes a large amount of pain. If the subject decides to withdraw their hand, they are considered vile as animals. But will the protagonist of Dune able to make it through the pain? The time will tell!

Why is this test important to the story?

The test or trail of humanity is too important for the storyline of DUNE as it is something that puts the movie into a pedestal, giving it a head start. Arguably, there has never been someone more important than Paul Atreides. He has visions about the future that always come true. That is why you must take this test. He is considered to be the first man who was able to pass the test in history. This leads to everyone suggesting that he is the long-awaited “Kwisatz Haderach”, the legendary leader who possesses the mental capacity to bind space and time.
