According to Lakeland police, three persons were found dead in a double murder-suicide at a Lakeland home on Christmas Eve. But, four children who were inside the house at the time of the shooting were found unhurt.
30-year-old Leighton Josephs is accused of entering the home on Atlanta Avenue on Tuesday evening outfitted with a handgun, and opening fire on the man and woman inside the house, killing both of them, according to Lakeland police spokeswoman Robin Tillett. Detectives state Josephs then shot himself to death.
Robin Tillett said that detectives have reason to think that Josephs knew both the man and woman whom he killed. The man who died of the shooting was 27-year-old, and the woman was 30-year-old.
Four children who were discovered in the house were all under the age of 10. Tillet stated that they are not issuing the names of the man, woman, or four kids.
It was not clear the relation between the kids and adults, or with Josephs.
Tillet said that the Lakeland police were initially called to the Atlanta Avenue at around 5:30 pm on Tuesday after someone informed hearing gunshots.
Lakeland Police Capt. Ed Cain called the event a “horrific tragedy that will affect lives for times to come” in a late-night press interview on Tuesday. They said the investigation of the case is ongoing.
Tillet stated that they are managing on the way to allow community members to donate or help the kids and will issue the details when it’s available.
