In 2008 Tom Holland, then 12 years old, was cast in the lead role in the London production of Billy Elliot the Musical. The live show was based on Stephen Daldry’s acclaimed 2000 film, about a young man who discovers in London in 1984 that he likes ballet. The casting took place in 2006 after taking hip-hop dance lessons with Lynn Page, owner of Nifty Feet Dance Studio, who choreographed the Billy Elliot movie and encouraged her to audition. Later, after two years of formal ballet training, Tom Holland made his debut in music as Billy Elliot’s friend Michael, later taking on the lead role.
Starring Billy Elliot opened the door to music for Tom Holland to make a change in the film. While his early credits on IMDb saw him lending his voice for the UK release of Disney’s The Secret Life of Arieti, the first film role he received was in 2012’s The Impossible, a split after 2004’s Indian Ocean. He starred in Ron Howard’s The Heart of the Sea in 2015 with future Avengers co-star Chris Hemsworth before being cast as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.
