What Is The Premise Of The Handmaid’s Tale?
Environmental pollution and sexually transmitted diseases have reduced the fertility rate in the world. As an aftermath of the civil war, the former United States has the government of Gilead establishing rules. Hierarchy has been established in society. Women are subjugated. They are not allowed to be owners of any property or handle money. They are deprived of education and are forced to work.
They can work in limited roles. Some of them work as natal slaves. The fertile women have been enslaved by the government. These women are termed as Handmaids by the government. The Handmaids are sent to the homes of elites. These women are tortured by the men in front of their wives. The handmaid is forced to carry the child of their masters. The Handmaids are transferred to the house of a different elite once her work in the previous house is over.
Handmaids have a dress code. They are supposed to wear long red dresses. The red dress is accompanied by heavy brown boots and a white coifs. These women have to cover their faces to conceal it from the world. The story of The Handmaid’s Tale revolves around June Osborne. She has been forced to become a Handmaid at the house of Gilead Commander Fred Waterford.
