Sometimes you may need to know what type of disk is in your computer. There are a couple of ways you can do this. Here’s one easy method to check what type of disk you have in your computer.
If you’ve got a functioning Windows 10 operating system, your C: drive is probably formatted in a confusingly named GPT format. If you’re using a pre-installed version on a new computer, it may come pre-configured this way. If you have a Windows 8 or Windows 7 computer, your C: drive is probably using a confusingly named MBR format. If you use Windows, you may have heard the terms GPT or MBR at some point. I won’t go through the distinctions between GPT and MBR in this article; instead, I’ll show you how to determine whether your hard disk is GPT or MBR in Windows 11. The same techniques apply in Windows 10, so you may use them to see if your hard disk is GPT or MBR in Windows 10.
In truth, there are several techniques to determine whether your PC’s hard disk is GPT or MBR. In this article, I’ll just show you three methods for determining whether your PC’s hard disk is GPT or not. So, let’s get this party started.
Method 1: In Windows 11, see if your hard drive is GPT or MBR.
Because of its user-friendly interface, the most common and widely used way is to use disk management in Windows 11. If you’re running Windows 7, you can also use it to see if your PC’s hard drive is GPT or MBR. So, the first step is to open disk management by right-clicking on the start menu and selecting disk management from the menu. Alternatively, type Diskmgmt.msc into the run dialog box and hit enter.

You can’t see the partition style now that the disk information is visible; to do so, go to the volumes and then to the partition style, which is either GPT or MBR.

This is one of the simplest and coolest methods available on Windows 11. Let’s check it out using Windows Settings.
Method 2: Use the Windows Settings to see if your PC’s hard drive is GPT or MBR.
We’ve noticed that Microsoft is gradually shifting options from the control panel into the windows settings since the release of Windows 10 in 2015. Almost half of the options in Windows 11 have been moved from the control panel to the windows settings. Microsoft’s move toward a single settings panel is a positive thing. Because Microsoft has moved all of them into the Windows settings, we’ll need to find the identical process we did with disk management in the Windows settings as well.
Step one is to open the Windows settings by pressing Windows + I on the keyboard, and then go to the storage settings under system. Then select drives and volumes from the advanced storage settings.

After you’ve accessed the disk and volume settings, you’ll need to click on your hard disk, where you’ll find properties, and then you’ll need to click on it.

Method 3: Using the CMD, determine whether your hard drive is GPT or MBR.
CMD and PowerShell, believe it or not, are two of the most powerful tools in the Windows operating system. To be completely honest, all you have to do is type a single command and the outcome will appear in front of you. So, in the Run dialog box, type Diskpart and hit Enter.

Now type list disk into the search box and hit enter. If the disk is GPT or MBR, you won’t see exactly what was written. Instead, you’ll find the * sign under the GPT. If it’s under GPT or MBR, the disk is one of those; if it’s under GPT, it’s just my partition style.
