Recovering in a hospital by a heart attack, a middle-aged Detroit person is immediately smitten by the juvenile nurse from Nigeria who’s caring for him.
“I never enjoyed the sound of my title, but if you say itsounds fine: Bobe,” he says, imitating her pronunciation. “Oh yeah, it is far better than Baaab.”
Well, they have got the Michigan accent correctly. CBS’s”Bob Hearts Abishola,” which premieres at 8:30 p.m. Monday, is the newest amalgamated sitcom with a story line located at the Motor City.
The assumption for the humor — the newest from sitcom king Chuck Lorre of”The Big Bang Theory” and”Two And a Half Men” — is now an incredibly 2019 take on the familiar motif of an improbable couple with much more in common than you would believe.
Bob (“Mike & Molly” celebrity Billy Gardell), who’s white, is a hard-working compression socks businessman having a sometimes tough family. Abishola (celebrity Folake Olowofoyeku, who is originally from Nigeria), who’s black, is a hard-working cardiac nurse using a sometimes tough family.
The laughs come out of their tentative love across ethnic lines.
Even though the show is filmed in Los Angeles, the first episode is sprinkled with Detroit-centric particulars. The Woodward Memorial Hospital in which Abishola operates borrows its title from the city’s most important avenue. Abishola’s son attends Jamerson Middle School, which seems like a nod to the terrific Motown bass player James Jamerson. The title of a real DDOT lineup, 16 Dexter, could be understood on the bus which Abishola requires to do the job.
And if Bob tries to utilize free compression socks to bribe Abishola’s co-worker (played by the fabulous personality celebrity Vernee Watson) to giving her house address, she quips,”Are they magical socks? … Honey, you are in Detroit. You have to provide me some cash.”
There is a proud Detroiter at the throw, Second City Detroit alum Maribeth Monroe, who plays with Bob’s sister.
