Netflix had announced that the second season of the series, Narcos: Mexico, will air February 13, showing the first look with a short teaser, as well as several pictures of the cast.
After the exciting events of Season 1, including what occurred to DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña) and the Narcos crossover episode with Pablo Escobar, played again by Wagner Moura, showrunner Eric Newman announced that the drama would be just as significant in the new season.

“To know the current level of narcotics violence in Mexico, you have to learn how it all began, and truly understand America’s integral role in it,” Eric Newman said in an interview. “Narcos is the greatest and most pleasant professional endeavor of my life, and to write and creatively direct this show, for now, four seasons, I will do this as long as they will let me do it.”

1. The New Timeline
After presenting the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel and the increase of the narcotics trade in Mexico, Season 2 of the series moves into the mid-1980s and tracks what arises when the cartel gets too big for its good. The season will also have a significant track about the corruption going on in the government and the political changes that transformed the region.
“This is the start of the fall for political party PRI, which is the political party that governs Mexico for 70 years,” Luna in an interview about Season 1. “People are growing, and there is this sense of people doing something they can control. A social awakening. That’s when the PRI begins to fall. So much occurs.”
2. Characters on the Rise in Season 2
After having a small role in Season 1, Alejandro Edda’s Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is set to have more of an influence on the story in this season. El Chapo is regarded as one of the famous narcotic cartel leaders in the world. He is currently serving a life sentenced at ADX Florence in Colorado. During season 2 of the series, Guzman will begin his rise, and this could lead to a more critical role in future seasons as he becomes the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.
3. The Outcomes of Season 1 Will Proceed to Ripple
As it occurred in real life, Gallardo and his cartel henchmen kidnapped and murdered Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña) toward the end of Season 1. This one move will have some significant ripple results into Season 2, including with American forces getting down even harder on the cartels in Mexico.
“The killing of Kiki Camarena changed everything for this organization, for Felix, and the entire relationship between Mexico and the states forever,” Luna said. “It’s a starting point in the story of our countries. I do believe that after that time, Felix’s life evolves, as does the life of everyone around him.”
