The Wilson Times reports that the Carolina Regional Task Force of the US Marshal Service arrested Darius Nathaniel Sessoms, 25, on Monday. He is accused of murder in connection with the death of 5-year-old Cannon Hinnant.
The shooting took place around 5:33 pm, officials said. Sunday, at 100 Archers Road in Wilson. Family members told police Cannon was out on his bike, playing with his sisters at the age of 8 and 7, when Sessoms approached the boy, pointed a gun to his head, and pulled the trigger.
The boy was pronounced dead in the hospital
Rescuers took Cannon to Wilson Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Doris Lybrand, a neighbor who witnessed the shooting, saw Sessoms run to her house, pointing a gun at Cannon’s head.
When Lybrand saw Father Cannon’s reaction, he immediately ran into the house, closed the door, and called the emergency services.
The suspect managed to escape from the spot
Sessoms later fled the scene in a 2019 Toyota Corolla, but authorities found him Monday night at his Goldsboro home.
Investigators report that Cannon’s family members said they knew Sessom, who lived alongside the child’s family for many years.
The reason for the shooting is currently unknown.
